Manchester has no shortage of law firms.

The harder question is which of them a potential client can actually find when they do not already know who to call.

For the first Manchester Law Firm Visibility Index, Findwell analysed 378 active law firms registered in Greater Manchester and measured how often they appeared when someone searched for legal help by problem or practice area rather than by firm name.

This is not a ranking of legal quality, client service or technical ability. It is a ranking of visibility across Google and AI.

The full index ranks 50 firms, breaks the results down by practice area and looks separately at which firms and individual solicitors AI names. Below are the top 10 and the headline findings.

The top 10 law firms in Manchester by search and AI visibility.

Findwell's visibility score combines Google position, breadth across practice areas and visibility in AI answers.

Visibility scores are relative to the highest-performing firm in the index. A score of 100 is the benchmark, not a percentage.

Slater Heelis is the clearest all-round performer in the first edition of the index. It combines breadth in Google with the strongest AI presence in the sample.

But the rankings also show that there is more than one route to visibility.

Olliers performs strongly in a narrower set of topics and is named repeatedly by AI. Clifford Johnston & Co reaches page one across four practice areas despite recording no AI mentions in this sample. Latitude Law ranks seventh overall but is named four times by AI.

A firm can therefore be strong in Google and weak in AI, visible for one specialist topic but absent elsewhere, or repeatedly named by AI without owning the broadest Google footprint.

78% of firms did not appear in the searches measured.

The headline finding from the index is not simply which firm came first.

It is the size of the invisible majority.

78%of the 378 firms assessed did not appear in Google or in an AI answer across the work-related searches measured.

That does not mean those firms lack expertise.

It means that, in this sample, their expertise was not surfacing when a prospective client looked for the work they do.

A firm can have experienced partners, strong client relationships and an excellent referral network while still being difficult to discover through non-brand search.

Someone typing a firm's name into Google already knows who they are looking for.

The harder acquisition problem is the person who has a legal issue but no shortlist.

They search the problem.

Who appears then?

Ten firms took 30% of the Google positions.

Visibility is not evenly distributed across the Manchester market.

30%Ten firms took 30% of every Google position recorded across the 18 firm-level searches in the index.

That concentration matters because the 378 firms in the study are not competing on a blank results page.

The firms already appearing prominently have accumulated pages, links, brand signals and search history around the work they want to be found for.

For firms outside that group, trying to compete everywhere at once is unlikely to be the most useful starting point.

A narrower route is to identify the practice area, client problem or specialist subject where the firm has genuine depth and build visibility there first.

Google finds firms. It rarely finds their people.

Findwell classified 465 Google results returned across the firm-level searches.

Of those:

  • 404 positions, or 87%, belonged to a firm's own website
  • 59 positions, or 13%, were directories, legal rankings, news or other third-party pages
  • just two positions belonged to a page centred on a named individual

That is the clearest gap in the index.

What Google mostly returnsWhat it rarely returns
Law firm service pagesNamed solicitor pages
Firm-level practice pagesIndividual expert content
Directories and rankingsA body of work attached to one person

Manchester law firms are competing hard for firm-level visibility.

Their people are barely present.

That is why a traditional team biography and a set of expert profile page designed around individual expertise are not the same thing. One confirms that a person works at the firm. The other gives search engines, AI systems, journalists and prospective clients a body of evidence around what that person actually knows.

In our AI sample, the shortlist became much shorter.

Google can expose a buyer to pages of results.

AI often returns a handful of names.

Across the 36 AI answers in the index, only 32 firms registered in Greater Manchester were named at all.

In 81% of the 36 AI answers, at least one of the firms in the study appeared. In the remaining answers, the model either pointed towards a directory or named a national firm outside the Greater Manchester register used for the index.

This should not be read as a permanent ranking of which firms AI will recommend.

The results are a September 2026 snapshot from a defined set of prompts and two web-enabled models.

But the contrast with Google is still useful. This is why Findwell treats AI visibility as a separate discovery channel rather than an extension of traditional search rankings.

A traditional search result can give a buyer dozens of options.

An AI answer can reduce that field before the buyer ever visits a law firm website.

The full report shows which Manchester firms were named most often and how individual solicitors performed when AI was asked for a person rather than a firm.

Which employment law firms were most visible in Manchester?

The overall ranking is useful, but clients usually search for a particular kind of help.

Employment law is one example.

Across the employment-law searches measured in the index, the five firms appearing highest were:

  1. Martin & Co Solicitors
  2. Myerson
  3. Gorvins
  4. Kuit Steinart Levy
  5. Slater Heelis

That order is different from the overall top 10.

It shows why visibility needs to be examined by subject as well as by firm.

A firm can sit outside the overall leaders and still own a valuable practice-area position.

The full report includes the same analysis for corporate and commercial, property and conveyancing, personal injury, family law, private client, criminal defence, employment and immigration.

What the full Manchester Law Firm Visibility Index includes.

The public findings above are only the headline view.

The full report includes:

  • the complete top 50 Manchester law firm visibility ranking
  • visibility scores for every ranked firm
  • the leaders across eight practice areas
  • the firms named most often in AI answers
  • analysis of individual solicitor visibility
  • the full scoring methodology
  • five recommendations for firms that want to improve visibility
  • the limitations and inclusion criteria behind the index

That detail matters because there is no single route to becoming more visible.

Some firms lead through breadth.

Some are strong in one specialist area.

Some perform better in Google than AI.

Others have individuals who surface even when the firm itself is less dominant.

The complete index makes those differences visible.

What the 2026 Manchester law firm rankings show.

Three conclusions stand out.

First, being known by name and being discoverable by problem are different things.

Brand search is important, but it captures people who already know the firm. Growth also depends on showing up before that shortlist exists.

Second, specialist visibility can be more realistic than trying to win every category.

The practice-area results show firms performing strongly in specific areas even when they are not among the overall leaders.

Third, the biggest open space is around named people.

Firm websites dominate Google, while pages centred on individual lawyers barely appear in the sample.

That is the opportunity Findwell is built around: making the relationship between a person, a subject and their body of work easier to find across search and AI.

For firms thinking about what to do next, our guide to content marketing for law firms explains how we build that visibility around individual partners.

How we ranked Greater Manchester law firms.

The first edition covers 378 active law firms registered in Greater Manchester.

A firm was included where its registered office was in Greater Manchester, it had an active Companies House record, and that record identified it as a law firm through SIC 69102 or as an LLP identified as one.

A Manchester office alone was not enough. National firms with a branch in Manchester but a registered office elsewhere fall outside this dataset.

The index combines Google ranking position, breadth across practice areas and visibility in AI answers.

For AI, the study used Claude Haiku 4.5 and Claude Sonnet 5 with web search switched on, recording what the models returned at the time of testing.

Frequently asked

What is the Manchester Law Firm Visibility Index?

The Manchester Law Firm Visibility Index measures how visible Greater Manchester law firms are across Google and AI when someone searches for legal help without already knowing which firm to use. The 2026 edition assessed 378 active law firms registered in Greater Manchester.

Are these the best law firms in Manchester?

No. This is a visibility ranking, not a ranking of legal quality, client service or technical ability. The index measures findability across Google and AI, and the report explicitly notes that it does not assess the quality of the work.

How are the law firms ranked?

Each firm receives a score out of 100 based on three measures: Google position, breadth across practice areas and AI visibility. Position accounts for 55% of the score, breadth for 25% and AI visibility for 20%.

Which Manchester law firm is most visible in 2026?

Slater Heelis ranks first in the 2026 index, with a visibility score of 100. It reached page one across five practice areas, achieved a number-one Google position and was named 11 times in the AI sample.

What does it mean if a law firm is not in the top 50?

It means the firm did not score highly enough to appear in the published top 50 under this methodology. It does not mean the firm lacks expertise or quality. The index only measures visibility within the Google and AI searches included in the September 2026 study.

How many law firms did Findwell analyse?

The 2026 index assessed 378 active law firms registered in Greater Manchester under its inclusion criteria.
